HOLIDAYMAKERS mingled with New Forest Commoners and prospective buyers to cast their eyes over various young fillies and ponies at the Beaulieu Road Pony Sales 64 years ago this month.

New Forest Commoners had always sought to control the sale of their stock through sales in the New Forest, and over the years the New Forest Pony Sales had taken many guises and had been held in various locations around the Lyndhurst area.

After the Second World War the sales were moved to the current Beaulieu Road location, where it has become the sales centre for semi-feral and handled stock for over 60 years.

Daily Echo:

Back in August 1950, when these photographs were taken by the Daily Echo, one of the happiest faces at that year’s pony sales belonged to three-and-a-half year old Ruth Fosberry after she had made good friends with “Tiddlywinks” – the smallest pony at that year’s New Forest Pony Sale.

After showering her new friend for the day with cuddles, little Ruth’s day was made complete when she was told that she would be able to see a lot more of Tiddlywinks after the horse was bought on the day by Wally Crowther, of the Sir Walter Tyrell pub, where her father was employed.
