RARE images showing the opulent surroundings of the Titanic have come to light in two travel brochures which described the doomed ship as 'practically unsinkable'.

The colour drawings depict the plush accommodation and facilities that first and second class passengers would have enjoyed on the luxury liner.

They offer glimpses of the promenade deck, reading room, swimming baths, smoking room, main staircase, the Turkish bath, state room and parlour suit accommodation, dining room and reception room.

Alongside the images there is an equally scarce copy of the sailing schedule for the ill-fated ship, highlighting its lost trans-Atlantic service.

The itinerary shows the Titanic would have gone on to make four trips from Southampton to New York between April to July 1912 had it not sunk on its maiden voyage with the loss of 1,522 lives after hitting an iceberg on the night of April 14, 1912.

The two brochures and sailing schedule have now been put up for sale 105 years after the tragedy. They have a combined estimated value of £20,000.

Andrew Aldridge, of auctioneers Henry Aldridge and Son of Devizes, Wilts, which is selling the lots, said: "The brochures illustrate first hand the truly opulent nature of the Olympic class of liners.

"We are all familiar with 'spin' and 'hype' these days when a major product or event is launched.

"But these brochures show us that the ship's owners, White Star Line, were very adept at this skill as their descriptions of the Titanic provide the reader with a number of reasons why you should choose to sail on the Titanic and not the competition."

All three items have been owned by a long-time collector of Titanic memorabilia who has had them for about 30 years.

One of the two White Star Line promotional brochures was for the ship's launch in Belfast in 1911.

A description in it reads: "...in the event of an accident, or at any time when it may be considered advisable, the Captain can, by simply moving an electric switch, instantly close the doors throughout, practically making the vessel unsinkable."

The items are being sold on April 22.
