One half of the first floor was home to the disco dance floor and cocktail bar with seating area, whilst the other half accommodated Charley’s Lunch Bar - a quiet area with tables and chairs, suitable for a quick bite or a full on business lunch.

Secluded alcoves provided a cosy setting for meals not only at lunchtime, but also for the evening when the club’s restaurant offered food from it’s a la carte menu.

The £150,000 club was previously a warehouse for Debenhams department store, and played host to occasional cabarets. promotion nights, fashion shows, and comedy acts.

In October 1984 some of the comics from the club got together to build a large ‘super toaster’ for Noel Edmonds’ Late Late Breakfast show.

Chaplin’s also became home to Southampton Jazz Society before the club changed hands in 1988.

Shortly after the club celebrated Charlie Chaplin’s 100th birthday in 1989, the venue shut it’s doors for good.
