A SPECIAL service marking the 99th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic has been held in Southampton.

The ill-fated liner sank after hitting an iceberg on April 15, 1912, on its maiden voyage.

More than 1,500 people lost their lives in the disaster, with a third of the dead coming from Southampton, most of whom were crew on the White Star liner.

Today’s ceremony at St Mary’s Church was led by the Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Reverend Alan Harper.

The ship was built in Belfast, and the archbishop highlighted the links between the Northern Ireland city and Southampton.

The mayor of Southampton, Cllr Carol Cunio was among dignitaries to lay wreaths during the annual memorial service.

Members of the Titanic Society also marked the anniversary by dropping a wreath into Southampton Water.

It's interesting to see what is surfacing as the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking rolls nearer. A technical manual for the sunken ship, the finding of Titanic bandmaster Walllace Hartley's violin, a number of new books on the subject, dedications, ceremonies, etc. I just read a recently released book called The Band that Played On, about the 8 heroic musicians who gave their lives playing music during the Titanic sinking, as referenced in this article.
