A boozer with a new Titanic theme was relaunched in Southampton to coincide with the day the ill-fated liner sailed into the city 100 years ago.

The Titanic pub on Simnel Street opened its doors to customers for the first time yesterday – the day in 1912 that the famous ship berthed in the city.

It is the only pub in the country to carry the name of the White Star liner.

Council leader Royston Smith was on hand to cut the ribbon as customers flooded to the bar for a refreshing drink.

The pub, formerly the Endeavour, has been fully refurbished and decked out with replica memorabilia from the ship and a picture of Titanic and the White Star flag appear on the pub sign.

Pub landlord Martin Geer said: “We thought it would be a nice way of celebrating the history of the ship in the city.

“People who sailed on the Titanic drank in this pub before they got on board the boat. It’s an old pub from the right era so it seemed like a great way of highlighting and remembering the boat’s links to the city.”
