SeaCity Museum officially opened
1:30pm Tuesday 10th April 2012 in Titanic News
By Matt Smith, Politics and business reporter
Southampton's £15m Titanic museum was officially declared open today in front of a crowd of hundreds including many descendants of victims of the tragedy.
Amid a sea of confetti, the SeaCity museum was declared open by eight year old Henry Ward whose great grandfather was a fireman onboard Titanic and survived the disaster.
Civic dignitaries including the mayor, council leader and Olympic rower James Cracknell led the ceremony which paid tribute to the hundreds of people from Southampton that perished on liner.
Holding placards with the faces of the crew who were on the ill fated liner, more than 600 youngsters from schools across the city paraded from the Titanic Engineers Memorial to the Civic Centre to mark the official opening of the SeaCity museum this lunchtime.
One of those taking part was four-year-old Jack Avery, from Eastleigh, Hampshire.
His mother, Kaye, discovered that her first cousin three times removed was a trimmer on board called James Avery.
She found out the link while researching her family tree and also discovered two of her own cousins who all met up today for the first time.
She said: ''We are all very proud of James and it's lovely for the children to be involved and to find out about their heritage.''

Also, is a sea of confetti suitable for a commemoration?
Like the Titanic's voyage, it's all down hill from here! I can't ever see this attracting the visitor numbers the council keep promising, not counting free resident visitors.

Confetti - it was to celebrate the opening of The SeaCity Museum which is a Museum built to celebrate the Seafaring History of Southampton.
>
The Museum will be a success. It is ideally placed and will serve to attract the friends and family of those living in and around Southampton, and the visitors from all over the UK, and all the tourists who pass through Southampton. With all the other projects in train, the City of Southampton will be a place worth visiting and should be embraced by all who live in Southampton.

Surely it should accommodate most of them. And yes, the children of Soutampton have a free ticket that cannot be used in school holidays. When do you suggest they go?

Its £8.50 per adult for entry. As I am unemployed and my wife disabled how are we able to afford such a luxury. My poor 1 year old will have to make do with the park outside. Well, the memorial is always worth a visit.

why not have something which everybody can use or relate to?
My council tax has been wasted on yet another elitist pursuit, arts quarters and museums are a joke. instead of trying to attract people to the city centre how about we offer improvements to those people who have paid thousands in tax over the years in their own neighbourhoods.
How many residents would have preferred better improvements to local facilities?
maybe a swimming pool, youth centres, ice rinks, improvements to the municipal golf course, improvements to the sports centre, repairing the derilict areas of the city.

Try reading these pages there are as many if not more against an Ice Rink as opposed to the museum.
I saw it on the Telly & unlike you I felt proud in my city.
Why don't you join your anti elitist mate & get in amongst the oars ( pity he wasn't injured by them) & end up in knick .people like you make me sick I'm proud of my cities history & this museum.

I am massively proud of southampton, the multiculturalism, the variety in people and places, my football team, my local area where i gre up, the people I know, my family and freinds, but that doesnt mean i cant see things which are far more important to the residents of the city than a musuem which nobody that I know asked for.

This is an attraction that celebrates one of the things our city is most famous for - its maritime heratige. It also commemorates a tradegy that (whether you like it or not) is a multi billion pound legacy. People will come from far and wide to the visit a Titanic exhibition, in what is considered the home of Titanic (regardless of it being built in belfast and named in Liverpool)
..by the way, have you been to london where the Natural History museum and Science Museum are jam packed 364 days a year!...
This will generate many thousands of pounds for our city that might then be spent on the city projects you mentioned.
who knows - you might one day get an ice rink so you can visit it with the other 4 people who want it...

It was nice to see a picture of my great grandad Walter Hurst on oneof the placards carried by children today. It would've been even nicer if that placard could've been carried by one of his direct descendants (of which there are plenty including several children still in the Southampton area) rather than a random individual.
You could of course have contacted the council to ask them if one of your several young relations with a direct connection could have carried the placard, where any of them there??

My point is that the money could of been spent on something inclusive for all (which a museum isnt) which would have benefited the community. The fact is simply becuase the titanic visited us once is this a justifiable way to spend public money? The whole planning of the museum was to coincide with the anniversary but what then? A few pictures of some dock cranes and a couple of merchant ships? People bang on about the maritime heritage but when it comes down to it we cannot touch Portsmouth for history in that field. So why try to compete?
I accept that museums generate footfall (although im sure that the NHM and NSM are free to enter which would go a long way to keeping attendances up) unlike some of the cretins posting above I am not a fool, but what benefit is footfall away from the major commercial areas? What benefit is there to the people of southampton other than another museum that will barely be used? We have art galleries which are never used by the vast majority of southamptonites (i have just asked three people if they even knew there was a gallery in the bargate and they looked at me like i was mad!!)
I do not disagree that history is important, but is it appropriate in this day and age to build a £15m museum while kids roll around in dogs mess becuase we cant afford to keep our parks and recreation grounds clean? Is it appropriate to spend £15m on a new museum when we could easily make improvements to the sport centre which benefit thousands of users on weekly basis? Is it appropriate to spend £15m on a museum when this council is cutting help for the elderly, sick and disabled?
My belief is that it is not.
Sorry if that conflicts with yours.

"and its a level playing field for everyone..." mmm guaranteed to get some backs up.. like .."we're all in this together".
People's circumstances are SO different and reward is almost as random as luck.
But I'm glad the museum is seen in a positive light by many people. It's important to have things that make us proud. It's also important to have places that are accessible to all. I hope this Council will now give the same high profile to free-to-access facilities like libraries and the art gallery.

Its £8.50 per adult for entry. As I am unemployed and my wife disabled how are we able to afford such a luxury. My poor 1 year old will have to make do with the park outside. Well, the memorial is always worth a visit.
Why not contact the museum & see what they say?
My point is that a museum should be made accessible for all.

drfunbags This museum isn't just about the Titanic it's about our sea faring history.
I use to go to the Ice Rink.I've heard about the speedway that was before the cricket ground & the Top Rank complex.
These are gone & will not return.
They were all private companies & as you've seen the so called bringer of an Ice rink to St Mary's isn't he wants to build flats.
this council are actively trying to get a Snow Dome built on the council land Town Depot with which they're seeing if there's a possibility of a small Ice Rink.
they are actively trying to bring more to attract visitors & for residents to do.
I have read Unionists & Labour supporters saying the funding for the museum came from council workers wages which they know it didn't.
they say spend it on the parks but they also know that would be a one off.
This money was grant, selling off of an industrial estate that would have cost this city millions to update & fund raising
I never go to the art museum so what we should sell it all & close it?
I'm not a Football fan so did I agree with Labour spending millions finding a private company the land to build a stadium?
You bought up elitism.I personally feel people like that who go out of their way to destroy other peoples happiness & enjoyment are sc=m so if you don't like my reply tough.
ELVISIMO is your life so boring all you can do is call people c=ck? to say that to someone you've never met shows exactly what a low life you are

You are absolutely spot on- Southampton supports the start of grandiose projects, but ignores the rest- like the shabby looking aviation museum-
Shipping and aviation are a magnificent legacy that is dismissed at a stroke!

Did somebody say Southampton Speedway ? Ah wonderful ! The roar of the bikes, THAT smell, Duane Eddy pumping through the PA, Bjorn Knutsson, Barry Briggs, Bert Croucher, Ronnie Moore (Bellevue ?), Ove Fundin. Tuesday nights, I think. My dad used to take me - I was nine. The little orange star-shaped badges - I had one of Ronnie Moore.
Stuff the museum and the ice rink ! Bring back the speedway !
They also forget the Lido,Go Kart track & more.
they say dilapidated areas well if they take pride in their city maybe these areas wouldn't be dilapidated?

Reward is not fair. It varies according to political will and public values. In Britain we now have greater unfairness of reward than we have seen for decades and far greater polarity of pay than many other nations.
I too have a strong work ethic. However a long life has shown me that there are certain attributes rewarded above others. Some of these are the least pleasant traits, like conceit and self assertion, rather than the qualities we really need for a harmonious society.
"stupid" is a very personal and offensive response from you and might confirm my opinion.

It was nice to see a picture of my great grandad Walter Hurst on oneof the placards carried by children today. It would've been even nicer if that placard could've been carried by one of his direct descendants (of which there are plenty including several children still in the Southampton area) rather than a random individual.
