Chalk Hill in West End was home to the man responsible for ensuring the death toll in the Titanic sinking was not even higher.

Sir Arthur Rostron, captain of RMS Carpathia, lived in Holmecroft, a house at near the top of the hill.

It was his ship which rescued over 700 people from the icy waters of the North Atlantic.

In 2009, near the foot of the hill, a new housing development was built and named Rostron Close, in honour of the captain.

He died in 1940 and is buried in West End cemetery, alongside his wife, Ethel, who died three years later.
