Resort Information
Exquisite Carcassonne is crowned by the fairytale turrets and battlements of the Cite, which overlooks the River Aude. Enjoy wandering the narrow streets and discovering one of the many restaurants within the walls of the extraordinary medieval fortress, beneath which the Ville Basse - or lower town - is a lively centre of activity, built alongside the river.
Itinerary
Day One
Fly to France or Spain, meet your Newmarket Tour Manager and transfer to Carcassonne and your welcoming hotel.
Day Two
Today's included guided tour of the medieval city of Carcassonne - one of the most striking walled settlements in the whole of Europe - will introduce you to the city, after which you are free to explore at leisure. Restored in the mid-19th Century, the bastion includes the inner Chateau Comtal and the beautiful Church of St-Nazaire.
Day Three
Continue your exploration, or join today's optional excursion to the exquisite port-town of Collioure. Visit the palm-fringed promenade that curves around the bay, before enjoying a wine tasting of the famous sparkling wine in Limoux and a stop to view the spectacular Cathar Castle at Queribus.
Day Four
Today's included excursion takes you first to the spectacular, UNESCO-listed Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard. Straddling the river Gard, it has three levels and is regarded as a masterpiece of Roman engineering. We then make the short journey to delightful Avignon. Don't miss the curious half-bridge of St-Benezet - the 'Pont d'Avignon' of the famous French folk song - or the Palais des Papes - the 14th-century home of popes and cardinals.
Day Five
A last full day in which to explore Carcassonne affords the opportunity to cruise a section of the tree-lined Canal du Midi, part of the 240-kilometre-long waterway connecting the Atlantic with the Mediterranean. Later, enjoy your last evening - perhaps dining in Carcassonne's wonderful Cite.
Day Six
We leave Carcassonne, transferring to the airport for the flight home, at the end of a wonderful holiday.
Further Information
Wining and Dining
The Languedoc region is one of France's greatest fruit and vegetable-growing areas, all ripened to perfection under this wonderful sunny Mediterranean climate. Fresh fish and seafood, sourced from Sete's important fishing port are widely available, and Toulouse's famous 'confit de canard' (delicious pieces of duck preserved in duck fat) is a favourite, along with tapenade or olive paste, found on many Languedoc dining tables. The renowned truffle is also a speciality from the region's hills. Languedoc is the world's largest producing wine region and offers excellent white wine including Picpoul de Pinet, and delicious reds such as Fitou, and the locally produced Minervois.
