Southampton's Guildhall Square to be opened Compagnie Carabosse tonight

FIRE will fill Southampton’s new Guildhall Square at a special free event to mark its official launch tonight and tomorrow.

The square, which has just been completely overhauled as part of a £4.6m renovation project placing it at the heart of the city’s emerging cultural quarter, will be transformed into a fantastic fire garden.

As the sun goes down, French fire alchemists Compagnie Carabosse will turn the square from stone grey to flickering orange as they bring the area to life with their bright and dramatic flaming creations.

The group, who have created their unique fire installations across Europe, will transformthe pedestrianised area with dancing fire sculptures and cascades of candles during the spectacular launch over the next two days.

Thousands of residents and visitors are expected to attend the spectacular free Alive and Ablaze event, which will also see other performances, events and activities taking place between 6.45pm and 9.45pm each day.

The launch celebrations have been organised by The Nuffield Theatre, Southampton City Council and ZEPA (European Zone of Artistic Projects) as part of the Art at the Heart series of creative projects marking the cultural quarter.

Councillor John Hannides, Cabinet member for leisure, culture and heritage, said: “I am extremely proud that Southampton’s Guildhall Square is now complete and residents and visitors can start enjoying this amazing new space.

“Compagnie Carabosse is exactly the type and quality of events we want to continue hosting at the venue.

“Guildhall Square is firmly establishing itself as the heart of Southampton’s emerging cultural quarter.”

As well as the fire garden there will be a variety of performances, events and activities taking place in and around the Guildhall Square.

The event is completely free and suitable for all ages. Last June, hundreds of people turned up to see a colourful troupe of drummers perform in Guildhall Square before the renovation work began.

And how much is this costing the tax payer and di they hire a consultation firm. This comes at an interesting time especially after yesterday announcing loss of Jobs and pay cuts. Again SCC have their priorities in the wrong place.

It's been advertised on the Southampton.gov website for about a month, and they sent flyers through the doors of thousands homes throughout the city.

Also, it has been on Facebook.

I'm sure this had been said before but, "not so brite after all" springs to mind.

About time we had something big on in the city that can be enjoyed by many in these gloomy times. Would hardly cost a fortune to organise!

We're all off down there, you can stay in and watch Eastenders if you wish!

Or you could just watch the video with this clip, see it done properly, save the environment-and probably someone's job-and watch Eastenders and Corrie to boot.

why would I want to watch a video, if we all did that no-one would ever get out of the house!! do you drive a car, or use a plane? I think they do far more harm to the environment.

I am NOT in favour of council cuts, however as the article says it has been jointly organised, no venue costs, and costs shared and each department has a budget in councils, so you can't rob one to pay the other, i.e. give more to social care from the environment budget for example. These budgets are legally set and accounted for, spends approved. It has f'all to do with anyone losing their job, it's celebrating our city, an achievement, the arts quarter and actually giving people something to do. We're also going out after to spend money in the city, which I guess most people will who are going along - see you there partygoers! :D

I never have, and never will watch Eastender's it's all doom and gloom as well! frankly I'd rather chew a bag of nails... have a nice night in!

Culture, What culture!
Southampton only has one culture and thats Yob culture.
You can throw as much money as you like at it and it will still be a white elephant used only by a few people with a vested interest and a loud voice to trumpet how cultural they are.

I can't say I've been to that part of the City in a while. I tend to avoid it as it borders on the student area of London Road / Bedford Place. I prefer the other end of the City, can we move it by any chance?

shame one guildhall square didnt catch fire, the building the council chiefs managed to find 25 million pounds for and the place is falling apart,or the benches that cost £30,000 each in guildhall square. The people of southampton voted for councillor smith ,so it cant be everyone elses fault.Politicians lie and we shouldnt be suprised.
