THEY beat boozers from across the county and were crowned the Daily Echo’s Best Local.
The South Western Arms in St Denys, Southampton, scooped the prestigious prize at the Best Local awards 2013 and was rewarded with a hog roast provided by Go The Whole Hog of Botley.
The public house impressed judges, led by Daily Echo Editor in Chief Ian Murray, with its attention to detail, friendly welcome, top staff and sensational approach to providing the best in ales.
Landlord and landlady Graham and Lisa Morris only took over the pub earlier this year as they were worried that it could be turned into a corner shop.
The award has lifted their spirits and they and 150 punters celebrated the local’s success with the free feast at the weekend.
Graham Morris said: “It was packed to the rafters. We’re very happy about winning.
“It was quite a surprise and quite an achievement. We’ve definitely had a lot more people here from further away.”
