WICKHAM'S food festival tasted better than ever this year with 5,000 people sampling the Meon Valley's finest produce.

The second Taste of Wickham Festival on Sunday saw more than 60 local traders offering everything from meat and dairy to honey and soap.

Attendance at the village's medieval square was up by 1,000 on last year, with more cookery demonstrations, live music and family activities on offer.

Interest from business was also up, with the 60 stalls chosen from a longlist for their links to the village.

"It was fantastic," said Heidi Isa, organiser and market towns development officer for Winchester City Council. "We were a bit apprehensive because the weather wasn't forecast to be very good but in the end we had a completely dry day."

She thanked community groups from around the village, who chipped in with other activities and support. They joined an army of 40 volunteers.

Stall fees and sponsorship from the Southern Cooperative paid for free children's activities, from face painting and crafts to a bouncy castle, to a free park and ride shuttle bus.

"There were lots of families there with children really enjoying themselves," Ms Isa said. "The feedback that he had was just amazing, both from the visitors and stallholders.

Daily Echo:

"There's certainly appetite to do it next year, provided we get the local support, which I'm pretty sure we will."

Taste of Wickham has always exceeded expectations, with last year's attendance of 4,000 surprising even the organisers, who had anticipated around 2,000.
