GRUESOME, garish and ugly pumpkins will be lining the shelves of a supermarket this Halloween.

Covered in green bumps, which resemble a boil on a witches nose , the affectionately named ‘bumpkins’ have been grown by Romsey based Barefoot’s Farm.

The unusual knobbly ‘bumpkins’ go on sale exclusively at Asda stores nationwide as a new creepy alternative to traditional Halloween decorations.

Barefoot’s is expected to supply more than 10,000 of the bumpy vegetables around the UK on its first drop, on October 16, but hopes sales will rise as families start to prepare for the spooky season.

Accounts manager at Barefoot’s Farm, Rebecca Charnely said customers seemed intrigued by unusual vegetables during a small run last year, and this has lead to the increased order.

She said: “People think they have gone mouldy, but that is just how they are meant to look.

“We have supplied Asda with the traditional carving pumpkins in the past, but they wanted something different, which would stand out on the shelves.

“We have been growing the bumpkins for a while but hadn’t tried to sell them in store, until Asda put them out in a small number of shops last year.

“They proved so popular that they have almost tripled the order for this year.”

The strange hybrid pumpkin is left to grow and harden naturally, instead of being cut when it turns orange.

Its skin is a lot thicker and harder than a traditional pumpkin, so cannot be used to carve, but Rebecca hopes it can act as an unusual alternative.

“What we try and do is leave them in the fields as long as possible so they go hard naturally and rather than harvest the whole crop, we only cut them when we need them,” she added.

“This is what gives them their unusual aesthetic.”

Barefoot’s has supplied Asda with range of different vegetables for many years, with the relationship proving fruitful for both parties.

Charlie Mills, Asda’s category manager for fresh produce, said: “We’ve introduced this new variety in response to the huge amount of customers who looking for something a little different this Halloween.”
