More and more games are starting to lean towards the open world style of gameplay. Red Faction has morphed from the first-person shooter that it was on the last generation consoles to a third person, open world romp like GTA on mars.
Players take control of a demolitions expert that witnesses the murder of a loved one at the hands of an EDF soldier. Although he had until that point been a peaceful man, rage coursed through his veins and a thirst to bring down the EDF takes hold.
The man’s demolition talents are as vital as his fighting skills and although the missions can get repetitive, the pleasure of blowing buildings sky high with well-placed charges never gets dull. But it’s not just the explosives that are fun as beating into structures and enemies with a huge hammer like Thor on Stella Artois is equally, if not more satisfying.
Guerrilla’s creation of mars isn’t just red dust and craters as one may conjure up in their mind; the scenery actually varies greatly from one map segment to the next. And the selection of vehicles is also impressive, each handling in a very different way.
It’s an open world game set in a different world that is quite simply, out of this world.
