Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond (PS3 PSN)

MOST of us have been there at one point or another. Resting our head in our hands as our thoughts are spinning around the room whilst a hideously disturbing taste in our mouth tickles our gag reflex. Normally this experience is coupled with the murmuring of the words “I’ll never drink again”.

But what better way to nurse a hangover than to play mindless video games? Nobody wants to over-exercise their dehydrated cerebral mass by playing Brain Training, Mercury or Tetris – it would simply hurt.

And that’s where games like Matt Hazard come into play. Anybody, in any state could play this. But to perfect it, to reach a level of respectable standard and not just look like a lemming on a death wish – it takes concentration and commitment.

Playing as a side scrolling shooter with little that makes it particularly independent, it’s the wacky humour that manages to sucker punch the tedium in the face and keep it at bay. When the outlandishly crazy humour fades however, you’re left with a fairly bog standard game that doesn’t pack much in terms of both substance and length.

It’s no Shadow Complex for sure, but with an addictive style that will painlessly have you playing through the game a couple of times, you could do worse. And for just £9.99 from the PSN, there’s little doubt that it would be money well spent to take your mind off of that beast of a headache for a short while.
