Rare events such as a total solar eclipse must be a spectacular site to bear witness to. Late last year however, Disney pulled their own spectacular rare event out of the hat. Toy Story 3 was one of the very few good games to be released with a good movie – it’s now evident that Disney are trying recreate that once again with Tangled.
A King in an enchanted land makes a deal in order to save the life of his beloved. A magic flower that could cure his wife's otherwise incurable disease was the trade for a curse that would see their newborn daughter Rapunzel, have long blonde hair with the ability to heal. Seeing an opportunity, a witch snatches the child and locks her in a tower. Eighteen years later the Princess is rescued by the loveable rogue Flynn.
Taking control of Rapunzel and Flynn, players must guide the couple through levels that require plenty of platforming skills and puzzle solving strategies. Each character has their own abilities that need to be utilised to progress, so a great deal of swapping between characters is needed.
If however the player has a buddy that wants to jump into the action to provide some co-operative support – it's perfectly doable. The screen shows both characters roaming until they wonder out of view, at which point the screen tears seamlessly into split-screen.
Visually there can be very little grumbling as the character animations and general settings are tidy, orderly and pleasing on the eye.
Play is relatively easy with there being little in the way of punishment for dying but to simply respawn. This coupled with the fact that the game is of incredibly short length means that it can be blitzed in just a few hours.
Tangled is a brilliant, family friendly game, there’s no doubt about it – it just needs to be longer.
