Whether it's spending time in the garden pretending to be one, being part of an army as one in a board game or taking control of one in a video game – most of us have probably been a mythological creature at some stage. Orcs, Trolls, Goblins, Barbarians and Dwarves are all amongst the favourites for males. Although I must admit, I've enjoyed being a faery just recently.
Faery: Legends of Avalon is a refreshing RPG that takes a step back to the glory days of the turn-based role-playing game. Despite not being hugely original and doing nothing that hasn't been done a hundred times before, it's been a while since there's been a game of this ilk on a seventh generation console.
Faeries: Tales of Avalon's character upgrade system gives players a chance to change the appearance of their personally named character and give them new abilities, skills and spells in the process.
Being a faery, it would be wrong to have to trudge everywhere by foot. Instead, you and your band of fellow faeries have the ability to zip through the skies, exploring the four different worlds that the story takes you to.
If you can't find your reading glasses (although if you can read this, you obviously have them on), you'll probably be interested to hear that there's no voice acting, just a load of reading. This again screams of how turn-based RPGs were, and actually adds to a feeling of nostalgic comfort for slightly older gamers.
Along with the long conversations comes the incredibly trendy use of multiple choice answers that reflect morality and produce different reactions.
For a quick and easily accessible RPG that reflects the turn-based games of yesteryear, you could do a lot worse that shelling out £11.99 or 1200 Microsoft Points. If you can't be bothered to read though the dialogue, or you still can't find you're reading glasses, this may not be for you.
