So with that in mind, it’s only fitting Frozenbyte Inc’s December release is one that calls upon true gaming tradition to bring players a side-scrolling platformer as good as any from their heyday.
Although it calls upon an old gaming style, it’s up to date with its startling physics-based puzzles and its eye-watering graphics.
Paying homage to classics such as Lost Vikings, Trine has three heroes at the centre of its story, each playable and each armed with their own unique set of abilities. The Knight is armed with a sword and shield, and can smash objects with his warhammer, whilst the Magician can make objects levitate and can conjure boxes out of thin air, but the thief is armed with a bow and arrow and can grapple hook about the place. Each of these can be toggled between at the touch of a button.
The puzzles are made up from the lusciously beautiful scenery and a variable array of often dangerous obstacles, whilst the solution is always created by knowing where and when to use each of the character’s abilities.
It’s not always obvious and it’s very rarely easy – a true test of both logic and gaming prowess.
What’s new to Trine in this second outing, and a perfectly welcome addition, is the mutiplayer mode which can be played both locally or online.
This is fabulous as more than one character can be on screen at any given time, enabling a combination of powers to be combined to create solutions in different ways.
Set in a fantasy world with some great lighting effects and awesome visual in general, Trine 2 is a true stunner. But it’s not all about looks; the physics-based puzzles and mind-boggling scenarios are complex but deeply satisfying at the same time.
Traditional, tasty and fresh – let’s hope your Christmas bird turns out the same.
