The recent scenes of avalanches on Mount Everest in the wake of the Nepalese earthquake were particularly poignant for one Southampton man.

Roger Brenton from Bassett, secretary of Southampton Video Camera Club, was at Everest base camp last November – last month the camp was the scene of a dramatic white out as millions of tons of snow buried the mountaineers and their equipment.

“I saw the news and thought: ‘Oh, God, I’ve stood there. It was a real shocker,” said Roger. “Mountains are very dangerous place. I saw a small avalanche while I was there but luckily it was on the other side of the valley.”

Roger, who recently retired after 40 years working for BT, filmed his week-long hike to the 22,000ft camp and the result won his club’s new "Holiday Cup".
