BANDS from across Hampshire are uniting for a vibrant night of global music in aid of victims of the Nepal earthquake.

The One World – A Benefit for Nepal gig will see artists and DJs coming together for charity in the Talking Heads in Southampton tonight.

The eclectic event, organised by Fueled by Biscuits promotions, is raising funds for charities supporting the humanitarian appeal effort in the Asian state following one of the worst quakes ever recorded in the region.

More than 7,500 people have died and thousands more injured since the 7.8-magnitude quake struck on Saturday, April 25, bringing down buildings and triggering avalanches in the Himalayas, leaving more than 200 climbers stranded on Everest.

Organisations and charities from Hampshire are among those supporting the huge rescue mission, searching for survivors and bodies, and sending desperately needed food and medical supplies to remote communities.

Global music The charity gig features global music ranging from African and Asian to Latin and European.

Headliners include reggae acts DJ Chiefrocka and DJ B1, plus Sicilian percussionist extraordinaire Paolo Pecoraro.

There will also be Caribbean percussion from One Root and a mix of world music styles from Butterfly.

Organiser and DJ Peter Northam, aka Petosh, said “I’ve seen the terrible images on television and it feels like the natural thing to do to try to help.

“The earthquake was bad enough but what is happening in the aftermath is very bad too.

“We hope we can raise as much money as we can to contribute to the relief effort.”

Doors open from 7.30pm-2am.

Entrance is free but people are urged to give generously.
