IT was one of the finest British jazz albums ever made.

Under Milk Wood was the iconic jazz suite by British jazz pianist and composer Stan Tracey.

One of the most celebrated jazz recordings made in the United Kingdom, it was inspired by Dylan Thomas's radio drama Under Milk Wood.

The 50th anniversary of the classic biggest selling jazz album, which has had many re-issues, is being marked with a national tour.

And in a major coup for the Southampton Jazz Club the Under Milk Wood album milestone tour will be calling at the club's home, The Talking Heads in Portswood, tonight.

In what promises to be a jazz night to remember, the musical line-up includes legendary Scottish tenor saxophone player Bobby Wellins who appeared on the original album.

Steve Melling is on piano and Andy Cleyndert on bass. Leading the band is the composer's drum maestro son Clark Tracey.

He played in several ensembles with his father from 1978 until 2013, including a quartet called Fathers and Sons with John and Alec Dankworth in the 1990s.

The Under Milk Wood album gig at The Talking Heads will be very much a family affair.

For providing the narration for this jazz masterpiece will be Stan Tracey's grandson Ben Tracey.
