A WORLD-renowned musician will make a rare UK appearance in Hampshire tomorrow (Aug 5).

Multi-instrumentalist Carlos Nunez will perform in front of some of the county’s great and good at the Victorian Chapel in Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley, as part of Chapel Music Sessions.

Carlos, from Galicia in northern Spain, is well-known as one of the world’s finest pipers and enjoys great popularity in Latin America and the USA.

Chapel Sessions hosts John and Sonja Davison said: “Carlos Nunez is probably Galicia’s most well-known, enduring and revered artist, with an undisputed reputation as one of the great pipers.

“He is enormously popular throughout Spain, Europe, Latin American and the USA and his records regularly attain gold and platinum status in Spain, and he has sold well over one million records worldwide.

Daily Echo:

“Playing with his band – brother Xurxo Nunez on percussion, Pancho Alvarez on Portuguese guitar and Canadian fiddler John Pilatzke – they play music that smiles with every note.

“Expect a wonderful evening of Celtic music with a few surprises. We are indeed honoured they are bringing their wonderful music to Chapel Sessions for what should be an unforgettable performance.”

And the chapel concert is not the only gig Carlos will perform during his UK stay, as he plays Wickham Music Festival on Thursday.

Daily Echo:

The concert will be attended by Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire Andrew Kent and wife Lesley as well as Eastleigh Mayor Cllr Jane Welsh and consort Len.

It will also feature a special tribute to Sgt George Findlater of the Gordon Highlanders, a piper who was injured in battle in India in 1897 and brought to Royal Victoria Hospital in Netley for treatment.

He was presented with the Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria herself at the hospital and the pipers will perform The Haughs of Cromdale – the tune he performed in that battle – in his honour.

Cllr Welsh will then lay a rose on a regimental tartan on the stage to complete the tribute.

The event is one of the last concerts to take place at the chapel before a major refurbishment.

Doors open at 7.30pm and refreshments are available including coffee and a bar.
