THIRTY years after the release of their first single, T'Pau are in demand from a raft of 80s revivals.

"In the 90s we were out in the cold," laughs Carol Decker.

"I thought it was all over and I thought thank God I actually wrote my songs and have got some money in the bank!

"Then I did my first 80s revival gig with Heaven 17, Go West and China Crisis and I haven't stopped since! I did 60 shows last year."

The flame-haired singer, best known for chart-topping China In Your Hand, puts the popularity of the 80s down to a number of things.

"Well of course I'm duty bound to say the songs were fantastic! But they were. They're pop songs which do what pop songs are supposed to do. And it's not just the music, the era was such a special time.

"The world was changing in terms of technology with MTV and for the first time you could sit in your bedroom and write a song. That's how Ronnie (Rogers, co-songwriter) and I started out.

"For a lot of people of a certain age, it reminds them of a great time in their lives."

Eighties revival festivals and shows like Icons of the 80s, which Carol appears in at Mayflower on Sunday alongside Go West and Nik Kershaw, are introducing the decade to a new audience with revellers taking their children along.

"We get so many of the younger age group, especially at the summer festivals, which I love as I really struggle with how old I am now! I'm 60 this year and I can't believe it."

Plans are being finalised for the release of a 30 year anthology and some special celebratory shows in 2017 - if Carol can fit it in around her busy schedule bigging up the 80s!

Icons of the 80s is at Mayflower Theatre on Sunday.
