Vaccines fans queue for tickets at The Joiners last night
THEY are set to inject some much-needed support into a struggling Southampton music venue.
Last night the pulling power of The Vaccines flexed its muscle as local fans queued in freezing conditions to bag one of the last remaining tickets for next week’s gig at The Joiners.
Details of the benefit event were only released on Tuesday, with tickets selling out within five minutes the same night.
The Joiners website was effectively taken offline after 6,000 hits were logged in ten seconds.
But 100 of the precious tickets were left up for grabs for the loyal fans who were prepared to do it the old fashioned way and queue.
The line began forming just after 5pm, with a snake of people winding its way along the adjoining alleyway.
Organisers were prepared, and issued raffle tickets to the first 100 on a one-per person basis, ensuring no one was waiting around in the sub-zero temperatures only to be left disappointed.
Alex Funnell, 19, a business student at Southampton Solent University, was one of the last to get one of the tickets that went on sale at 7pm on the door.
“We are really pleased, we may be students and skint but this will be a great gig so we had to try.”
James Hardy made sure he got his hands on a ticket by arriving not long after 5pm. “It is all worth it to get a ticket,” he said.
The Vaccines, whose frontman Justin Young grew up in Southampton, are the latest band to lend their support to the ailing venue, which faces an uncertain future because of dwindling audiences.
The resurgence was led by Frank Turner last month and according to bosses at the St Mary Street venue more acts are being lined up.
Manager Pat Muldowney said: “We have been very happy with how it has gone so far. It is great of bands like The Vaccines to help us out like this. We are really looking forward to next week now.
“Loads of the top bands have played here over the years so it is great when they come back to support us when they hear about the situation we are in.”

Good Shoes, Summer Camp, The Primitives, Portugal. The Man, Vivian Girls, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, to name but a few. Since the departure of one of the best promoters they ever had, the bands have mainly been cack.
Goes to show you get the right bands & the paying public will come if you don't you die easy as that

The Joiners is known for bands playing there first tours. You really dont expect bands like The Vaccines or Frank Turner to play every week do you? The Joiners is also known for nurturing local talent, such as Sean McGowan, Novatones, Welcome Pariah, Nomura, Bury Tomorrow, The Rising, Soma High, Mr Tom etc etc.
If any of you have contact with The Who, Fleetwood Mac or Paul Weller we would love to hear from you.
Social clubs which you thought would be packed showing bands/music & cheap beer are shutting why?
to save money so as to not put up the price of beer they go for cheap bands then lose customers then they close.
I love the fact you give a chance to new talent but are you supplying the public with say 90% new & only 10% established talent?
Do you have the same band Friday,Saturday & Sunday or is it one day?
Maybe make the Friday or Sunday new talent day & Saturday established bands,
Some new bands should be willing to do the first gig for peanuts or are you saying you pay a high wage for an uncertainty?
I know my brother booked a band for his Social club which he'd never heard & had to stop them as they were a punk band so please enlighten us on your payment methods & your way of making sure of exactly what your getting & if the public will actually stay & listen to the music?
Would you say hire a band you'd not even heard?

Bands play the joiners on there first tours, they then move on to the wedgewood rooms and maybe the Uni then the guildhall and so on and so on.
They very rarely come back once they have played, why would they. The whole point is to get bigger and bigger, once they play the guildhall they are on 5K minimum, some bands who play there are on upwards of 25k. We cant compete with that as a 200 cap venue.
Ive booked many bands ive never heard, you take the word of agents who sometimes get it right and sometimes get it wrong. Bands that play at the joiners will not get rich from what we pay them, thats not the point.
Last thing, im not in it for the money, ive earned under the minimum wage for the last 2 years because of the climate we are in. I Do it because i love music, i love to see the faces of punters who have just seen one of the greatest gigs they will ever see. I love to see the faces of the bands that play there for the first time, on a proper stage with a proper soundman, you cant put a price on that.
Southampton need the Joiners, and the joiners needs the people of Southampton to support it :-)

No sarcasm from me. You said book the right bands and the public will come and see them. Ive been doing this a long time and still have no idea who "the right" bands are.

if they liked what they heard they booked them this was very successful.
only when they stopped doing this & several bands ended up being total crass did they realise & it was to late.
from a club that was packed on a weekend they became empty & died.
can you not do auditions for these bands & see if they're any good no matter what genre they are?

Well, have just discovered TheJoiners after seeing Tom Odell booked to play there. Fair enough, that's been moved to The Brook due to overwhelming demand, but from seeing this I'm now booked to see Theme Park and The History Of Apple Pie (two great up and coming bands) there. So, in my opinion, the venue is getting some great future talent booked up; keep up the good work and hope to become a new regular at The Joiners!
