SOUTHAMPTON Philharmonic Choir are working with British composer Janet Wheeler on a new commission.

The piece, will be 20 minutes long and for choir and orchestra, should be completed by the summer of 2016 with a world premiere expected in November.

A generous bequest from the estate of a long-standing choir member and music lover Joan Wood, who with husband Eric wrote music reviews for the Hampshire Chronicle, has been used to cover some of the £10,000 cost of the commission and choir members are also fundraising.

The choir, who perform a concert of French music at Winchester Cathedral tonight, have been making music for 154 years.
