FANS of San Francisco rock group The Tubes will be lining up at a Southampton venue tonight to catch a glimpse of one of the most iconic bans bands of the late 1970s When the iconic The Tubes perform at The Brook, not only will they be bringing their mix of entertainment and classic songs, including White Punks on Dope, there will also be the distinct air of Leader Singer lead singer Fee Waybill’s musical influences.

“My mother was a big band singer so there was always music in our house, the radio, records or mum just singing,” said Fee.

Although the first record the future lead singer brought was Fats Domino’s Blueberry Hill, it was the Beatles who changed the course of his life, as he explains.

“I was in high school when the Beatles came out and they changed everything for me.

"I brought every record they made, I would sing along.

“From then on I knew that I wanted to be a singer and that was it,” Fee added.

While at Scottsdale High School, in Arizona, USA, Waybill joined the school’s varsity group Scottsdale Singers, his audition song to get into the group was a rendition of Maria from West Side Story.

Under the guidance of a teacher, Joe Esile, who could see the young Waybill’s talent, his musical journey expanded into performing.

“Joe also directed the school’s plays so I started to perform in a number of musical school productions, I would do three on four a year,” added Fee.

It was this foundation of the theatrical elements that would eventually find their way into the Tubes live shows.

“We started in San Francisco and there were a number of artists in the group, I was the theatre guy.

"We just started adding all these different elements together.

"I would create a character and costumes and props for them.

“We would make all our own sets and costumes – everybody was doing something weird.”

One of Fee’s most famous characters, the larger than life Quay Lewed, is more than likely going to turn up at The Brook along with a number of other theatrical elements.

Add all of this to the band’s musical catalogue and you’re guaranteed an entertaining night out.
