SOUTHAMPTON will tonight celebrate the golden anniversary of the biggest selling jazz album.

Under Milk Wood was the iconic jazz suite by British jazz pianist and composer Stan Tracey, whose musical career included working on Southampton based luxury liners.

One of the finest British jazz albums ever made, it was inspired by Dylan Thomas’s radio drama Under Milk Wood.

The 50th anniversary of the classic album, which has had many re-issues, is being marked with a national tour.

And in a major coup for the Southampton Jazz Club the Under Milk Wood album tour will be calling at the club’s home, The Talking Heads in Portswood, tonight.

TIn what promises to be a jazz night to remember, the musical line-up includes legendary Scottish tenor saxophone player Bobby Wellins who appeared on the original album.

Leading the band is the composer’s drum maestro son Clark Tracey.

He played in several ensembles with his father from 1978 until 2013, including a quartet called Fathers and Sons with John and Alec Dankworth in the 1990s.

Providing the narration for this jazz masterpiece will be Stan Tracey’s grandson Ben Tracey.

In the early 1950s, Stan Tracey worked in groups on the Southampton based transatlantic liners Queen Mary and Caronia and toured the UK in 1951 with celebrated American singer and band leader Cab Calloway.
