AWARD-winning folk singer song writer and guitarist Sam Carter brings his brilliant trio tour to New Milton’s Forest Arts Centre next month.

He has reinvented himself and his sound for the ‘Trio Summer Tour’, which coincides with the release of his third album How the City Sings.

Sam Carter appeared on the folk scene in 2009 with his debut album Keepsakes. His early career was mentored by Nitin Sawhney, Martin Simpson and Bellowhead, so it was no big surprise when Sam, who had already drawn comparisons to Roy Harper and Richard Thompson, won Best Newcomer at the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Described as ‘the finest English-style finger-picking guitarist of his generation’ by Bellowhead’s Jon Boden, Sam has toured the world performing intimate solo shows, with a full band or collaborating with other artists. In 2014 he teamed up with Jim Moray to form False Lights, a band with the stated aim of updating the template of folk rock and making a joyful racket. Their 2016 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominated album Salvor, proved that people really were ready for traditional English songs played in a style that owed as much to Radiohead as it did to Fairport Convention.

Produced by Dom Monks (Laura Marling, The Staves, Paulo Nuttini) and Neil Cowley (Adele), How the City Sings is the most personal release of Sam Carter's career, featuring 12 songs shot through with images and aspects of life in the nation's capital.

Sam takes How the City Sings on the road with his trio (drums and bass) and comes to New Milton’s Forest Arts Centre on Thursday June 23.
