HE has had a string of hits including the global sensation I Wonder Why.

American jazz superstar Curtis Stigers shies away from the pop idol label, preferring to be simply known as a musician.

But as a singer, saxophonist, guitarist and songwriter he is in a class of his own. As part of his latest UK tour, the 50-year-old entertainer will be stopping off at Christchurch’s Regent Centre on TuesdayJuly 19.

Since first appearing on the music scene in the early 90s, he has had hit songs which have become soul classics, had a song on the soundtrack of the huge movie The Bodyguard and recorded and performed with Eric Clapton, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker and George Benson.

Curtis Stigers has also received numerous awards such as the London Times Jazz Album of the Year, Jazz Artist of the Year by BBC Radio 2 and Best International Jazz Singer and an Emmy nomination.

Curtis wrote the theme song for the TV-Show Sons of Anarchy, bringing him to the attention of a new audience and receiving a nominated for an Emmy Award in 2008. The show, which ran from 2008 to 2014, received an average of 3.7 million viewers.

His latest UK tour includes many smaller regional venues, something that appeals to Curtis:

“I prefer a small to medium theatre because the audience is there strictly to listen. No distractions. I had some very good luck with the sales of my first album and it’s allowed me to follow my creative instincts wherever they lead me.”
