YOUNGSTERS at Marchwood Junior School enjoyed an open air picnic concert by Marchwood Orchestra in aid of the Simon Says charity for bereaved children.
Conductor Simon Wilkins led a lively version of Dvorak's Slavonic Dance, followed by the Folk Song Suite by Vaughan Williams.
The programme continued with the Arabian Dance from the Nutcracker Suite (Tchaikovsky) followed by the infectious rhythms of Ravel’s Bolero.
After the interval, children from the school showed off their musical talents before the orchestra returned with well-known pieces which included excerpts from Carmen (Bizet), Tahiti Trot (Tea for Two cha-cha arr, Shostakovich) and a tango, ‘Por una Cabeza’ (Gardel).
The concert was brought to a surprise conclusion when a large brown bear appeared from nowhere and started to mingle and dance among the audience to the strains of the Teddy Bears Picnic.
Meanwhile, Marchwood Prelude played at this year’s Waterside Arts Festival along with blues band The Guv’nas and the Southampton Folk Orchestra. Audiences enjoyed an eclectic mix of foot-tapping blues and rock, traditional folk and uplifting ballads.
