THE University of Southampton Chamber Opera Company will take to the stage with their version of Acis and Galatea next week.
The 18th Century opera by GF Handel tells a story based on Greek mythology - the story of the water nymph Galatea who is in love with a shepherd named Acis. They are happy together, but their lives are ruined when a jealous monster, the cyclops Polythemus, plots against them. As a result of Polythemus' jealous actions, Acis loses his life, but Galatea's divine powers allow her to create a beautiful fountain from his remains, immortalising Acis.
The opera, at St Michael's Church on Friday and Saturday, will be accompanied by a performance of Vivaldi's Gloria.
Direction is by Grace Curtis and musical direction by Lucy Grant. The opera has been produced by George Smith, Sabrina Beever and Charlie Hawkins. It stars soloists and chorus from the University of Southampton Chamber Opera Company and an orchestra of friends of the company.
