IT'S back to where it all began for Hampshire folk punk star Frank Turner this weekend.

The Winchester musician, now a stadium filler and one of the music stars of the London 2012 Olympics, is to return to one of his favourite venues The Joiners tomorrow for a rare intimate matinee show.

The event leads into Patfest, a fundraiser for Joiners legend Pat Muldowney who has been unable to work since a nasty scooter accident a few months ago.

Frank's association with the tiny St Mary's Street venue goes back a long way. He saw his first ever show there - Snug, featuring Ed Harcourt on guitar, back in 1995.

The post-hardcore band Million Dead which he performed vocals for played there many times, including their last ever show in 2005.

He has also played a handful of solo shows there, including two festive fundraisers on his 31st birthday which helped keep The Joiners in business during tough times in December 2012.

It will be a very special show for those lucky enough to have snapped up tickets in the few minutes it took to sell out.

These days, Frank is more used to bigger stages as a regular at Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds festivals. In 2012, he and band The Sleeping Souls performed three songs - Sailor's Boots, Wessex Boy and I Still Believe - for the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony.

The hard-working troubadour has performed at dozens of festivals as usual this summer, including Boomtown near his former Meonstoke home earlier this month, and will play Victorious Festival in Portsmouth after the Joiners show tomorrow night before heading to the States to tour next week.

He has revealed he is already halfway toward completing his seventh studio album, which he has pencilled in for release early next year.

After six albums of mostly acoustic punk-inspired folk, he’s taken it upon himself to take things in a new direction – experimenting with electronic music and incorporating elements of soul.

Frank's show is sold out, but tickets are available for the remainder of Patfest.
