FOR someone to suggest that there is a “scene” happening locally is a bold move and, when that scene is not too obvious, then some might call it foolish.
However various people think that although the south coast is buzzing with great talent, it is not a particular sound that binds these great musicians together: it's the song writing.
Unfortunately this is not helpful to the mass media who need a ‘thing’ like ‘Brit Pop’ or ‘Madchester’ to latch onto, but if they visited the clubs and bars of Southampton they would hear some great tunes.
Others who see something in the air include Julian Aplin from Southampton’s ‘Angry Badger Records’ who recently announced he was about to start putting on gigs because... “I can think of at least a dozen bands playing locally who could easily be gracing any festival stage.”
Meanwhile Dlugokecki’s manager Marks ‘Smutz’ Smith has already tested the water with the first of his “Sound of the C” weekend gigs where Southampton acts support a well known group or musician.
The first featured Brighton’s Passenger and the next, I can reveal, will have ‘Flamboyant Bella’ topping the bill.
Mark has a poetic spin to my notion: “...a rising tide gathers all ships... it's nearly high tide and it’s certainly high time... that at least one or two of these ships came in!”
And for the music fan there is nothing worse than missing the boat; especially when the ‘scene’ is on their doorstep.
