Ex-Beatle to headline music festival

SIR Paul McCartney will close the show as the final headliner at this summer’s Isle of Wight Festival.

The former Beatle will take the long and winding road south to come together with Jay-Z and The Strokes as the big names taking to the Seaclose Park main stage over the course of the three-day event in June.

The announcement comes after weeks of feverish rumour about which big name would fill the final headline slot, which in the past few years has attracted some of the biggest names in rock and pop.

The Rolling Stones, The Who, REM, David Bowie, The Police and Neil Young are among those to close the festival since it was resurrected in 2002.

Sir Paul was heavily tipped to be the final name on this year’s line-up, but festival organisers had refused to comment before he announced details of his UK-wide tour this morning.

The legendary Liverpudlian has said he will play songs from throughout his long career during the performance, including many Beatles classics as well as tracks from his time with Wings and his later solo career.

The Sunday night slot on June 13 is part of a summer tour of Britain and Ireland, and sees him performing days before his 68th birthday.

It is only the second time he has ever played a British festival as a solo artist, having headlined Glastonbury in 2004.

Paul McCartney has done some classic stuff on his own as with 'The Frog Song' and with 'Mull of Kintyre' with The Beatles, it's great that folk will get a chance to see him on stage before it's too late.

Mull of Kintyre was a hit in 1977 with Wings not the Beatles. The Beatles split in 1971.

Oh feck. That means I'll have to listen to that gad awful Dance Tonight. That has to be the single most atrocious pap I have ever listened to from what is supposed to be a musical genius. I still can't believe the sycopantic music/radio industry never blurted a word of disdain for that nonsense of a song. I'm considering selling my ticket now

I wish he'd do the decent thing & retire. Madonna too - they are just embarrassing to watch.

I hate this man. If I vented my spleen enough, I'd probably break the swear filter. I'll stick with a 4 letter word beginning with C.

Couldn't agree more St C!! he's an obnoxious, over rated, crappy faded pop star.... like someone else said wish he'd just retire gracefully and everyone in the media would stop pretending he's some kind of icon, he's not...those days were well and truly over a long long time ago.....what a turn off!

lol @ the numpties. He may have knocked out the odd bit of pap but you cannot take away his legacy from the greatest band ever. He will be 68 when he takes to the stage and guaranteed to storm the festival.

Fantastic catalogue of hits to choose from and his band is amazing. This is pure legend and makes a laughing stock of the Brit Bozos that have come and go over recent times. You wouldnt have had the likes of Oasis without their predecessors who changed the world.

Never mind- you can always have your Jay Z rapping away like a demented 'poet' on speed or any number of 'cool' (lol) artistes- most of whom would get bottled off the Joiners stage
