TRIUMPH over adversity is always worth celebrating and when singers find their voice after injury or surgery then it seems even more poignant.

So for Moneytree’s front man Campbell Austen it’s a great relief that he’s been able to record the band’s third release and prepare for a UK tour.

“It feels amazing,” was his reaction but, he told me, “there has definitely been a psychological and emotional aftermath.”

Campbell says that singing has been “the thing I was best at since I was three or four years old” but when he was diagnosed with a growth on his vocal chords his reaction wasn’t as negative as you’d imagine.

“I was actually relieved,” he explained, “because I hadn’t been able to sing properly for most of the year and I had assumed it had just worn out from overuse and drinking and smoking. Once it was diagnosed there was a cause and a solution.”

The result is Moneytree’s EP The Great Indoors Part III the final part of their triptych – which I recently discovered is a painting made up of three panels.

The band were formed in Southampton a couple of years ago, are signed to the Sotones label and have collaborated with some well known locals: Band Of Skulls, Thomas Tantrum and The Moulettes.

Their UK tour reaches us in October and you’ll be able to witness their acclaimed live performances at these venues: 22nd The Nell Gwynne, Portsmouth; 23rd Lennon’s, Southampton; 24th The Railway, Winchester.
