Local Bands with Xan Phillips from showcaseuk.tv

A BAND line-up has no traditional arrangement but usually it is a four piece made up of bass, drums guitar and vocals.

But, as we all know, anything goes in rock ’n’ roll so when The White Stripes arrived with just guitar and drums, it seemed new and innovative. In some respects they were influenced by the North Carolina two-piece Flat Duo Jets but The White Stripes inspired The Black Keys in the US and Blood Red Shoes in the UK.

And in our area we’re blessed with two examples and both are playing this weekend. Tonight Winchester’s Dirty Pavor play The Hobbit.

Featuring Paul Gumma and Gary Munday they produce music that... “puts emphasis on experimentation without sacrificing melody.”

They’ve only just started and have some way to go before they catch the act whose name is on everyone’s lips: Science of Eight Limbs (So8L).

So8L have raised experimentation to a new level and injected a healthy dose of creativity into the music scene.

They are great live and you can catch them tomorrow during the Pulse Festival at Sunnyfields Farm in Totton.

Pulse is the most concentrated festival Southampton is going to see this year and one that caters for the music lover and the family.

Headlining the main stage are Subgiant with Basement Jaxx’s Vula topping the acoustic stage.

Along with support from some excellent south coast acts like Pronghorn, Heathward, Fly Frankie Fly and The Rebs.

Comedian Grant Sharkey is the compère so plough your furrow to Totton tomorrow.
