TWO up-and-coming Hampshire acts are shooting for stardom after winning places in the national final of a singing competition.
Crystal Cooper, 16, and four-part girl band MELO will perform in front of thousands at London’s O2 at the grand final of the Open Mic UK competition on Saturday, when they will have the chance to impress industry judges such as Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale.
Crystal’s talent was discovered in her mum’s kitchen, but now she has the chance to launch the singing career she dreams of, with the winner of the competition receiving a record deal and a touring contract.
Performing arts student Crystal, from Totton, said: “I never thought I’d get as far as the final. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Crystal’s mother Tracey said: “Of course, everyone thinks their own children are great singers, but I’m so pleased she’s got through. We’re taking about 50 people to London to watch her.”
MELO features 17-year-olds Molly Scott, Emily Stewart, Olivia Tambini and Kelly Childs.
“Emily, who attends Barton Peveril Sixth Form College, said: “It’s been quite daunting but it’s a once in a lifetime experience, it’s going to be an amazing day.”
The winner of Open Mic UK will be decided by judges and text voting.
To vote for Crystal, text “Open53” to 86222.
