IT’S something of a coup for Los Angeles indie favourites Local Natives to make an appearance in Southampton.

The five-piece are revered as darlings of US college radio stations thanks to their luscious folk-pop style, and with two critically acclaimed albums behind them already, they are destined for global recognition.

They were impressively supported by London’s Breton, who ploughed through their short set with Foals-infused melodrama, and exciting Aussie troupe Cloud Control with their jangly guitar dream pop.

Local Natives frontman Taylor Rice, complete with enviable facial hair, charmed through crowd favourites Airplane, Camera Talk and Shape Shifter, while the group meticulously dazzled with material from Hummingbird – their 2013 album release – especially with its opener, You and I.

The four-way vocal harmonies were enchanting throughout, and their take on Talking Heads’ Warning Sign was from a different dimension.

For all their comparisons with Arcade Fire and Fleet Foxes, Local Natives proved their can be ranked alongside their fellow North American titans, but hold their own when entertaining this Southampton crowd.

If anything, their talents deserve better recognition.
