HAVING bags of confidence is a must for any band starting out.

One off performance can have catastrophic consequences for future gigs.

But Royal Blood don't have to worry about that.

The power rock duo have the world at their feet and rightly deserve their plaudits.

From the offset, the pair stormed The Cellar with thunderous riffs and ferocious drumming.

The sold out crowd packed into the venue's relatively cramped surroundings lapped up every second of the 40 minute set.

They tore through crowd favourites such as Little Monster and Come on Over with frightening ease, with frontman Mike Kerr making his bass guitar sound like the entire six-string section of Led Zeppelin.

But the biggest reception was for the set's closing behemoth - Out of the Black.

Combining the rocking brilliance of Queens of the Stone Age and the bluesy dominance of Black Keys, Mike Kerr and Benji Talent almost brought The Cellar to a pile of rubble.

Speaking after the gig, Kerr said the reception the band is receiving is unbelievable.

But on this showing, Royal Blood should be preparing themselves for superstardom, and with a support slot for the Arctic Monkeys coming up it seems the wave they are riding will continue to grow.

It was quite a coup for rising Southampton gig and club promoters Psychedelia to secure this act, and it's exciting to see who they bring to the city next.
