FROM Nirvana to The Dambusters, the back catalogue of the Ukulele Orchestra of GB is as eclectic as a weekend at Glastonbury.

The world-renowned strummers came back to Southampton for one night only to play all their greatest hits.

A packed audience eagerly waited at the Guildhall to hear the band take to the stage and they didn’t disappoint.

Despite the fact that many of their songs have been heard before and there were some routine jokes, they were as impressive as ever.

With a self-effacing crack about appearing twice at venues – once on the way up, once on the way down – the audience got fully behind them.

Newcomers could marvel at the random and varied listing of tunes being played on an orchestra of ukes, while those who had been before were in awe of the arrangements of new songs.

Favourites such as Ennio Morricone’s The Good The Bad and The Ugly were just as refreshing as their rendition of their new addition of Pharrell Williams’ Happy or Daft Punk’s Get Lucky.

Their youthfulness and energy on the ukuleles was infectious and if the audience felt it was appropriate to dance then they would have done.

Highlights include the aforementioned Happy and the rendition of Tom Jones’ Thunderball with the bass singer holding a very long note and raising eyebrows among both the audience and his colleagues.

Some may have worried that they would never be able to listen to the original songs in the same way ever again but frankly when they are this creative and enjoyable it makes little difference.
