The Enemy, Guildhall, Southampton

A packed Southampton Guildhall bounced to the rocking sounds of The Enemy, pictured, giving the audience the best possible start to a bank holiday weekend.

With the release of their new album Music for the People due on April 27 the three-piece band played a clever mix of old and new tunes.

In all the only disappointment of an otherwise storming gig was the fact the Coventry lads only appeared in front of the Guildhall stage for an hour from 9 until 10pm.

Any other band may have been booed off stage for leaving at such an early time but frontman Tom Clarke kept the waiting masses entertained.

In truth, it was the classics such as Away From Here, Had Enough and Technodanceaphobic that the crowd was gagging for.

The three or four songs that The Enemy played from the new album including new single No Time for Tears showed definite promise.

As a massive fan of not only the refreshingly original rock and roll music but also the themes of hope derived from the debut album We’ll Live and Die in These Towns Clarke literally sings to a nation.

And how apt in a time of economic depression.

Bass guitarist Andy Hopkins and drummer Liam Watts cannot be faulted as their playing adds to the buzz of an already electric atmosphere.

Having seen The Enemy at their last appearance at the Guildhall this was a much more mature performance from the band.

As someone with a ticket for the band’s upcoming tour with rock gods Oasis at Wembley this was a fantastic prelude and I cannot wait to see them again.
