Side projects are always a mixed bag. But the Scots always have the ability to pull something bizarre yet beautiful out of the bag and The Fratelli’s Jon Lawler has done just that.

Teaming with Lou Hickey he brings us Codeine Velvet Club.

The album is a weird mix of Britpop and musical extravaganza.

That weird kind of music hall, grimy jazz often epitomizes 1930s Prohibition America and that mood can be heard blazing through the background of the album.

It’s definitely something a little bit different to start 2010 with and quite frankly it might be one of the albums of the year already.
