Artworks light up the long dark nights at gallery
LIGHTEN up, a new exhibition at Southampton Solent University’s Showcase gallery, looks set to provide the perfect antidote to shorter days and darker evenings this November.
Featuring light sculptures, light installations urban, light graffiti and large scale projection events in the heart of the Southampton, the exhibition – funded by VIVID – celebrates the beauty of light in all its forms.
The main exhibition runs until December 8, Monday to Saturday, at Solent Showcase, at the Sir James Matthews Building, Above Bar, and will culminate in a spectacular special event featuring live light drawing, music and light projections on and around Southampton Guildhall on November 22 and 23.
A host of artists and musicians will perform on the night and members of the public will also have the opportunity to create light drawings, music and animations.
Contributors to the exhibition at the Solent Showcase gallery include artists Henrich & Palmer, who have created a new work of art for the window of Solent Showcase which can be seen until 9pm at night.
Lightmark is showing stunning light art photography taken in wild, remote landscapes and artist Jo Berry is exhibiting light boxes that link science and art.
Sculptor Ben Yates is displaying intricate light cities made from salvaged computer circuit boards, and light bombing artist Sola will work with local young people to create urban light graffiti for the gallery.
