AN audience with the man Golf Digest magazine dubbed “the greatest golf commentator ever” is taking place tonight at The Concorde Club.

Peter Alliss is the long-serving BBC broadcaster whose dulcet tones have wafted over the airwaves continuously since 1961.

The former golfer turned professional at the age of 16 and won 21 tournaments, including three British PGA Championships, and enjoyed five top ten finishes in the British Open.

He combined playing with commentary until his retirement from the game in 1975.

Another of his claims to fame was giving Sean Connery golf lessons before the actor filmed the famous golf club scenes with Gert Frobe in the 1965 James Bond movie Goldfinger.

Alliss has been the doyen of British golf broadcasting since the death of Henry Longhurst in 1978.

He is noted for his depth of knowledge of the game of golf, his wit and ‘off the- cuff’ humour.
