One end of the Green Room was appropriately dressed as a municipal football changing room.

Playwright Tom Wells seems set to follow in the footsteps of another Son-of-Hull as this comedy has all the deft touches associated with John Godber’s northern-based plays.

Barely Athletic are a five-a-side football team playing in the Hull Gay, Lesbian and Transexual League and we follow their progress through their first season.

Director Ed Howson’s team selection was flawless; Danni Fletcher plays a blinder as lesbian pub landlady Viv, recently bereaved of her sister and obviously using the team as grief-therapy, cajoling and lambasting her team-mates.

Oliver James Gratton (‘Beardy’ Geoff) had some of the best lines and delivered them brilliantly, Jonathan Marmont had a good game as the token ‘straight’ but a highlight was the tenderly-played scenes between Steven Lilly (Danny) and Daniel Hallett (Luke).

A wonderful script is nothing if not well-delivered and this was a Champions’ League performance!
