HANS Zimmer is not a familiar name to some people, but many will know and admire his work.

A Hollywood great, he is one of the most unsung heroes of modern cinema and this is his first ever tour.

On a night of surprises and delights, it became obvious is that what lies behind the astounding music from films such as The Revenant, Gladiator, The Lion King and Interstellar lies the most incredible machine that is Hans Zimmer and his orchestra.

The evening began when the German composer took to the stage to cheers and applause from an audience obviously appreciative of his work.

Hans began the night with a simple melody on the piano and was then joined by a plethora of instruments.

Frequently acknowledging everyone on stage, his performance was not just filled with passion and fantastic music but stories of how he got to his position, people he has met along the way and anecdotes from his long career. He was as inspiring as he was humble.

As the evening progressed, each performance was filled with nostalgia for film scores that have become not just legends but the movie soundtrack to our lives. Put simply, the music was perfect: the trembling, the sound, the excitement.

But the music is nothing without the great man himself, his ability to involve everyone within his performance was astounding. Often being seen with a different instrument, at various moments he would transform from playing a beautiful piece from Interstella on the piano to hammering out a riff to The Amazing Spiderman with Incubus Guitarist Mike Einziger.

Other famous works included Pirates of the Caribbean, complete with choir and parrots, The Lion King, Inception and The Dark Knight.

The ten minute standing ovation that greeted the great man's final bow was well deserved.
