REVIEW: Jack and the Beanstalk

Kings Theatre, Southsea

IT’S not often a 15ft giant and pantomime cow take centre stage and steal the show but last night at the Kings Theatre’s traditional pantomime, they did just that.

Obviously the other cast members played a starring role too but high praise to the performers ‘inside’ Daisy the cow who made her dance and cavort around the stage; all done with the utmost style and grace.

Even the enormous giant was light on his feet, and was just menacing enough to not scare any small children in the audience.

Three Kings Theatre favourites returned for this year’s panto – Matt Dallen, Marcus Patrick and Phil Randall.

Matt was back to his slapstick best as Simple Simon and formed a hilarious partnership with Marcus who donned his black boots once again, this time in the role of King Willy.

While Phil piled on the slap, pulled on some garish outfits and went down a storm as Dame Tilly Trott, even mimicking the X Factor’s Honey G in a memorable scene, which the audience adored.

Allo Allo actress Vicki Michelle represented the good side by playing Fairy Peapod with grace and elegance, while the baddy (Witch Blackweed) was played by Anne Hegerty, best known as ‘The Governess’ on ITV’s quiz show The Chase.

Princess Jill was bought to life by 2013 X Factor finalist Jade Ellis who had an incredible voice and played her role with a feisty gusto.

And who can forget the show’s dippy hero, Jack (Ciaran Butler) who successfully climbed the impressive beanstalk prop and slayed the giant.

With modern day twists woven throughout this classic pantomime, the Kings Theatre have produced another roaring success, which totally engaged the audience with plenty of laughs for young and old.

Jack and the Beanstalk is on until January 1, 2017. To book tickets visit kingsportsmouth.co.uk or call the box office on 023 9282 8282.
