King of Pop Michael Jackson dies after cardiac arrest

Pop star Michael Jackson has died in hospital in California.

The singer was not breathing when paramedics arrived at his home and he was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

He was taken to the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Centre, after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest.

Jackson was due to perform 50 farewell concerts, bowing out on an illustrious music career spanning several decades which earned him a fortune.

He was pronounced dead at 2.26pm Los Angeles time (10.26pm UK time). He was 50-years-old.

Close friend Uri Geller told Sky News: "I'm absolutely devestated and shocked. He was a young man terribly fit and basically in good shape."

Matt Blank from the Michael Jackson World Network fan club told BBC News 24 he was "a bit dumbfounded and a bit shell-shocked by it all".

He added: "I find it hard to believe this could be a reality.

"In the past, health issues of Michael Jackson have always been rumoured. I can only imagine this is down to the amount of stress he was under to come out and perform."

He added: "It's just unimaginable that Michael Jackson is no more, it's just unbelievable."

Today's main Daily Echo headlines

Brian Oxman, a Jackson family lawyer, told CNN he was told by brother Randy Jackson that star collapsed at his home in west Los Angeles this morning.

A cardiologist at UCLA told showbiz website TMZ.com that Jackson died of cardiac arrest.

A great entertainer but how tardy has the media coverage become already? On Radio Solent late last night the host Paul Miller was encouraging comments along the lines of this being akin to September 11th in scale, how dare he compare that awful event with the death of an entertainer who self destructed? People were calling in saying that they were so upset they would not be able to go to work today, it was as big as when JFK got assassinated. Paul the DJ said that 'Thriller' was the biggest thing in the 80's, I think that the fall of communism, the fall of the Berlin Wall, The Falklands and millions of other stories were far bigger and more important than the sale of a few million albums by the very talented but extremely strange Michael Jackson.

Why do people always make jokes about someone elses premature demise? It's in such bad taste. I wasn't a fan of Michael Jackson but I have already heard people saying that the Jackson Five are going to reform as the Jackson Four, or that Jackson has been looking a bit pale for a long time. There is a time and a place for humour and it is not here and now.

Snooky are you still trying to come to terms with the death of Elvis or Jade Goody? It's sad that Jackson has died, he did some good stuff. But he wasn't that talented, I never saw him play a musical instrument or actually sing live even on TV. Because we are not all comparing Jackson's death to 9/11 does not make us uncivilised and wrong, we just live in the real world, not the one of the traveling media circus.

Reading some of the comments today, i can say i am ashamed to be British. I have never heard such half witted unintelligent comments. Firstly, a father dying at 50 years old, is tragic whoever it is. Secondly to say Michael Jackson is not a music legend is utterly ridiculous and i would hate to see your record collection!! Thirdly, he was never CONVICTED of child abuse. All parents amazingly took payouts instead of pursuing a court battle. If i had reason to believe ANYONE had touched my child i would not accept any amount of money to stop the conviction. Which seems somewhat odd dont you think? A talented father, brother, and son has died and you ignorant people shold have some respect.
Also, to the person who said that Jade Goodys death is no loss, what a nasty individual. A mother of 28 suffering and dying of cancer is a loss, a tragic one.

Lets hope no mindless jokes and comments are made about people you know when they pass away.

may i point out to you, he paid off the family's off the kids, that;s why he was never found guilty, and i bet you i dont have one song off mj in my colletion.
mj could not sing live, (last time he sang live was when he was in the jackson's 5), he did not write music, lyrics or play any kind off musical instruments. he stole music rights mainly from the beatles.
the only thing he was really good at was showmanship and he played a lot off kids and some adults in to beliving he was good, and that what showmanship do best fooling the fools in beliving they are the best.

Southy im struggling to understand your writing, but all i can say is that a parent that "knows" that a man is a child abuser, but accepts a payout and allows him to walk free. Well, im struggling to call them "parents" they dont have much of a case do they.
We will never know if it is true or not. But jokes and abusive comments at the time of a "fathers" death, make the people saying them very undignified and disrespectful. Im pretty sure his children and family have no interest in his ability as a entertainer or anything else to that matter when they are laying him to rest.
If you dont like him or his music, then why waste your time commenting at all. Leave those that do to grieve in peace.

May I just say how irritating I find your comments, not only their content but the spelling and grammar.
I would like to put you right on a couple of points:
firstly, how do you know whether or not MJ sang live, when obvioulsy you haven't been to a concert. I have and he does.
secondly, if you would care to go into a music shop and check the back of any of his CDs (but of course you won't) you will find that he either wrote or co-wrote most of his songs.
Get your facts straight.

Firstly, my goodness your writing is terrible!!
Secondly, if you really have no intelligence or interest in Michael Jackson, then i suggest its YOU that shouldnt come on here!! Many a artist is overrated, but would high profile singers like Paul Mccartney and Madonna be commenting on someone who sold a lie? Im quite happy to go down to Glastonbury, and if you had any knowledge of the event you'd find that the artists there are now performing tributes to Michael Jackson, so i guess you are saying that they are all stupid and taking the lie too?!?!? Also, going to L.A makes no difference. I realise that money talks in most countries across the world. But that does not forgive the fact that these parents allowed themselves to be bought off instead of pursuing the truth for the sake of their children.
For someone who is not interested in Michael Jackson, you seem to be wasting alot of your day writing about him.

Saints1951, Southampton, you may point out by all means, you need to read tmz even they have said in the past that mj do not sing live, his voice is enhance to give that higher pitch in his voice and is copied and recorded for stage shows for him to mine to, mj is no wyanne sleep on stage.
mj covered a lot off other songs and changing one word or even a note or two, gives him the right to put his name on the credits,Jarvis Cocker got him right when he said mj is all about imagery. and that he copied a song from him. take a look at the high number off music and lyric writers he employed, if you done your own stuff you would not employ people that do this sort off stuff, or if they did it would be for that one off special, bu mj employed different music and lyric writers for each off his albums.

My memories of Michael Jackson are of his incredible moonwalking & the video of him dancing along the sidewalk in Biilie Jean. RIP.

I must admit to being a fan of his output as a great showman but still capable of laughing at the distasteful gags that are flying around.

It seems that the Princess Di syndrome has kicked in again, thanks to media saturation. Like a kind of subliminal thought control that sees people weeping as if it was one of their family or friends.

MJ certainly inspired the new wave of dance-based acts although most being pale (whoops) imitations and resulting in puppet-like boybands/girl bands etc.

Jacko was just another victim of global success and attracted the usual hangers-on, leeches, drug dealers, quack doctors - the same parasites that kept Elvis locked away from reality.

His 'private' life casts another angle and I think many of us can accept that money-grabbing 'parents' can easily be tempted to prostitute their own kids and allow them access to a millionaire weirdo, as the dollar signs whizz through their own sick minds.

Jordy Chandler was the jacko-pot winner of all time and any others who were procured via their own creepy family

I've just listened to Thriller, why does he mention Mike Read in it? Why does he pronounce Thriller 'Godzilla?' Why does he say "Giiiiiiiirlll" and "Eeeek!" in every song?
Why did he dangle his child from a balcony?
Why nearly 24 hours after his death is Sky News and BBC pushing it out as 'Breaking News?'
Why?
Why?
Why?!!!!
Exactly my view too. OK I feel sorry for his family to lose him at such a young age, that's always tragic. I wasn't a fan of his (after my generation) but I was impressed with his moon walk and I understand his fans shock at the news, however, the whole of Thursday was taken up with this story and no other news on BBC and CNN, etc. On Friday we are getting reviews of his past music career most of the day. Now give me a break media, enough is enough, let's just let him and the rest of us rest in peace. Good grief, if he was in UK I'm sure someone would have suggested a state funeral, oops. Dread to think what the media will do when somebody really important passes away.

RIP Michael Jackson.♠
