X Factor’s Danyl Johnson at Oceana

IT was clear to all who saw the first audition: Danyl Johnson can sing.

Despite repeatedly squinting and clutching his chest, he had the potential to be a star.

Simon Cowell loved him, the nation loved him – but then something weird happened.

Literally overnight, Danyl Johnson seemed to develop an ego the size of Mars.

They tried hard to change him; they curbed his attitude, made him smile more and produced videos of him going back home to see his family. They even cut his hair, but that didn’t really work either.

The result, despite making it through to the semi-finals, was his eviction from the show last weekend. Which meant he took to the stage at Oceana on Friday night.

His first song, Man In The Mirror by Michael Jackson, was powerful, superb and served as a reminder as to just how good he can be. But then the ego returned.

He did that silly thing where he tosses the microphone from hand to hand, read ‘shout-outs’ off his wrist and generally buttered the audience.

It detracted from his performance and left you pondering why he thinks he’s so good, especially considering he hasn’t sold a single record yet. MARTYN HANNAH
