ELEVEN unusual venues across Southampton will play host to some of the city’s top musicians next week during Music in the City.

Hundreds of artists will perform for free in the historic vaults, art gallery and shopping centres at the fourth annual event.

A launch event takes place in the mayor’s parlour on Monday followed by performances in the City Arts Gallery each lunchtime.

But the real fun starts a week today with hours of nonstop music all over the town centre, including everything from electronic to jazz, rock to flamenco and classical to gospel.

With so much going on it’s difficult to know where to start, but highlights include open mic sessions from 1pm in the Undercroft Vault, the Southampton Philharmonic Orchestra and the City of Southampton Orchestra in the City Art Gallery and Rosalind Fountain’s Musical Showcase in The Marlands.

Various venues will play host to jazz, soul and hip-hop from Katrina, the riotous troupe Ken Wood and the Mixers, five-piece dub, rock and reggae rabble Zegema Beach and singer-songwriter and 12-string guitarist Nick Tann. Enjoy the powerful and soulful voice of Charley Macaulay and electronic collaborators Heath: Ward.

The music continues next Sunday.
