I NEVER thought I’d say it, but those One Direction chaps have gone up in my estimations.

It’s not so much the overrated teen icons that bother me, Best Song Ever is a catchy little tune and at least they’re a touch more wholesome than Justin Bieber.

It’s more their obsessive followers, some of whose fandom borders on lunacy.

But some rather clever PR person has come up with a way of using that in a positive way, even if it did cause a hardy bunch of footie fans some serious earache.

When Doncaster Rovers reserves turn out normally, they can expect 100 or so supporters – on a good day.

But, this week, the Keepmoat Stadium was filled with a nearly 5,000 strong army of new Donnie fans, most of them teenagers, few of them actually watching the match and almost all of them screaming themselves silly.

It’s almost as many as the first team attract in the Championship.

There was one reason for that – 1D heart-throb Louis Tomlinson was limbering up ready to come off the bench for his childhood heroes.

Most of the crowd were also making their footballing debut and two hardy souls had travelled all the way from Mexico for the game with local rivals Rotherham United, in aid of a local children’s hospice.

Few cared that it ended a disappointing nil nil draw. Or that Louis didn’t exactly cover himself with glory as a rather out of touch right back.

They got closer to their idol than in their wildest dreams – and all for £7 a ticket.

A pop megastar, good enough to play football professionally, realising a dream in turning out for his home town team and all in the name of charity?

Bless his little red and white striped cotton socks.
